Effective disclosure begins with complete, accurate and timely police records. This training explains the officer’s role in preserving and communicating information that may affect the investigation, the credibility of a witness, or the accused’s right to make full answer and defence.
Learning objectives:
- Recognize information that must be brought to the Crown’s attention, including relevant notes, recordings, drafts, continuity records and potentially relevant police misconduct information.
- Prepare clear, contemporaneous notes and distinguish observations from assumptions.
- Preserve original material, document corrections and maintain continuity.
- Identify information that may engage privilege, privacy, safety or informer concerns without withholding it from the appropriate disclosure process.
- Respond promptly to follow-up requests and continuing disclosure obligations.
The course uses practical file-review exercises and scenarios to reinforce early issue identification, candid communication with prosecutors and careful handling of sensitive material. Local legislation, policy and supervisory direction continue to apply.
